This should not affect most people (I've been wrong so many times I don't want to think about it :)). First the most important change: its name has changed from recent to rec to bring it in line with our other 3 character dir names (you *know* what they say about conformity!). I've left a link called recent pointing to rec for now so no one's script will break. However... the link will dissapear in about a month. So if you use the "recent" directory anywhere, please change it to "rec"! Second I've changed the way files are added to the rec directory. From now on, the file date should be a close approximation of the upload date (yah!!!). If any of you have noticed, this has been the way the "test-recent" directory has been setup for the past 2 months or so. I think I'm done testing it, and it should work... :) The test-recent directory is gone. So -- change references from "recent" to "rec" and you should be ok. File timestamps in the rec directory actually mean something. Hope y'all had a happy holiday adn will have a good new year! Let me know of any problems or suggestions. Sven :) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Dec 93 09:51:53+080 From: smoliar@iss.nus.sg (Stephen Smoliar) Subject: eccentric modems (Q) I wish to report some potentially curious modem behavior in the hopes of learning if anyone has had similar experiences. Because my wife uses our equipment heavily in preparing her teaching materials, we are a two-Macintosh family. Our principal machine is a IIvx to which I have connected a SupraFAXModem V.32bis. We both use this for sending FAX messages, and I run Kermit 0.99(188) to connect to the Unix server at my office. When my wife has the IIvx engaged, I can still dial in from my PowerBook 170, on which I installed a Global Village PowerPort/Gold (again through Kermit). The server at my office supports a fairly reliable 14.4K connection through which I down-load frequently with no trouble. Uploading, however, is another matter. The PowerPort/Gold has given me no trouble; but the SupraFAXModem inevitably aborts after being obliged to attempt inordinate numbers of retries. I have nothing more than anecdotal evidence thus far; but I have now attempted several case studies, all of which turn out the same way. The success of the PowerPort/Gold leads me to believe that there is no problem at my host's end, regarding either the modem or Kermit. On the other hand, the SupraFAXModem manual seems to allow for more settings than I have seen for any modem I previously owned. So I figure it is worth reporting this in the hope that there is some setting I have not yet considered which might finally make uploading through this modem work. This is probably also a good place to report an interesting eccentricity on the PowerBook side. The PowerBook prints on an Epson LQ-100 which used to be connected to a PC clone my wife used before she became a Macintosh user. I use PowerPrint for this connection. Again, it works very nicely . . . as long as I am not trying to maintain a PowerPort connection at the same time. If I try to print in the background while maintaining a modem connection, the connection just drops out on me, usually while the first page is printing. I was wondering if this is a PowerBook problem, possibly having to do with an inability to chew gum and walk down stairs at the same time. Again, I would appreciate hearing if there are any similar experiences or any hypotheses for a remedy. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Dec 93 20:09:17 PST From: Robert Lenoil Subject: FaxSTF - no upgrade policy I too was upset at STF's insensitive upgrade policy. I purchased a Supra fax modem just at the Quadra 840AV appeared. Due to that machine's funky serial port architecture the fax software did not work. I called STF in September. All they did was take my name and number and said "they'd call me" when they had some news. No news. When 3.0 came out I called to see about an upgrade. As the poster noted, STF had no upgrade in place. I called Supra and told them that I wanted a copy of the 3.0 software or they could take my non-faxing fax modem back, thank you very much. After more than a week, I received a call from someone at Supra who told me that STF is working on a bug fix release to their version 2 software, which would allow faxing on the Quadras. Supra would send me a copy of that when available, but STF was not giving any dates as to when that would be. I'm still deciding what to do at this point. Supra has said they will take my modem back (through the reseller where I purchased it). For now, I've plugged in my old Global Village TelePort that runs off the ADB port; it can fax on the Quadra since it doesn't use the serial port, and I am continuing to use the Supra for V32.bis communication through the serial port. Now that Global Village has a fix for the AVs, I may just buy a TelePort Gold and return the Supra, washing my hands of the STF people forever. Robert Lenoil ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Dec 93 10:53 CST From: jpoutine@spu1.uwsp.edu Subject: FaxSTF no upgrade policy I posted my comments about FaxSTF's policy of no upgrade to their latest version, even when it contains a bug fix from a previous version. I received many comments, so will post a couple here. They were quite on-sided--people thought FaxSTF had a nice product but are shooting themselves in the foot by the poor way they are treating their customers. All they need is some decent competition, and people will "jump ship." Here are a couple comments: So you know you're not alone - I've had problems with getting an STF upgrade also. In my case the STF manual promised a free upgrade, but they won't honor it. I posted a note about it in comp.sys.mac.comm about a week ago ("FaxSTF upgrade problems"). Since then I've heard from others with the same problem - it seems STF just doesn't care. Seems they gave away a lot of free copies of 2.2.x bundled with modems, and they want to recoup their r&d investment by making the upgrade path very expensive. In the process they are upsetting loyal users. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Considering how my case has been handled, I think the only option is to jump to a competitor's product (which I'm looking into now), and help others to avoid STF in the future. A company's longevity largely depends on good customer service - I don't see a bright future for STF. I couldn't agree more with your CSMD evaluation of STF's policy regarding upgrades. Well over two months ago I sent them two faxes requesting technical help with 2.2.3, with snail/internet/fax mail return addresses. Not a peep! They don't write the software (see Get Info box) but I think they are still obligated to support the software; after all, you register it with them. Do you know if STF has an Internet address? Maybe if all us "dissatified customers" sent them a blast, they'd cut us a little slack ? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Dec 1993 18:10:51 -0600 (CST) From: EASCHULTE@ALEX.STKATE.EDU Subject: Finder Help Dear fellow Mac users, I am in need of the mac finder file (7.1P2) I have been using the finder that came with my emergency disk, but I just discovered that this finder is not complete. The answer was that IIsi impoverished (I guess oxidized) speaker contacts could momentarily be improved by software having a high current though them, but that it was a hardware problem. There were some recommendations and one fellow warned that you shouldn't clean the contacts with an eraser because they had delicate gold plating (so how did they get impoverished), rather you should use gentle strokes of Irish whiskey. Several other alcohols were mentioned, some not available in USA as toxic. This entire thread would be instantly available through something called wais, a parallel machine that allows you to search old digest e mails. The trouble is I can't figure out how to use the new wais to get all this stuff down and have to rely on my vague memories of this thing from years ago. My best advice: Plug in to an external amplifier until wais works again and you can reconstruct all the options. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Dec 1993 22:07:27 GMT From: isis@netcom.com (Mike Cohen) Subject: IIsi Sound Problems (Q) Info-Mac@sumex-aim.stanford.edu writes: >I have a IIsi at home that is always having problems with the sound. That's a pretty well known problem with the IIsi caused by poor connections between the speaker and the motherboard. Other solutions are to use external stereo speakers (my favorite solution; the stereo sound is great) or open up your mac and clean the contacts (it's directly under the front side of the motherboard). Likewise, your >background functions will grind to a halt when the foreground application >is doing some processor intensive task. I'd like to point out that the MacOS is taking a lot of blame in this thread when it is very possible for a good programmer to eliminate the difficulties that the original poster was experiencing. The Mac *DOES* have provisions for executing tasks that are very time-sensitive in a way that is independant of the normal multitasking scheme. Another poster mentioned AppleTalk transfers as an example of this; network transfers do not get interrupted by heavy foreground activity or holding the mouse down. The same can be done with modem transfers, although it requires more work on the programmer's part. My fax modem, an Interfax unit, implements this scheme, and faxes are sent and received smoothly even when I hold down menus or launch apps. I have also heard that MacIntercomm does the same thing; as a result, holding down the mouse button, launching apps, formatting disks, etc. have no effect on the transfer. Now, a Macintosh with preemptive multitasking would of course make everything much easier; programmers wouldn't have to make the extra effort to make sure their file transfers can survive intense activity. However, I think some if not most of the blame lies with the application programmers for not taking full advantage of the features available in the MacOS and eliminating this problem. Unfortunately, cooperative multitasking schemes are more easily crippled by poorly written apps, leaving users much more vulnerable to shortcomings in their programs. Take heart -- Apple propaganda promises that "future versions of the system software will feature preemptive multitasking and memory protection". They're working on it. Multithreading is already available, and we should start to see some concrete examples of the extra power it provides shortly. He got very far along, got deeper and deeper into areas he had no experience in and well, mid way through all the arrangements, he had a breakdown. He did good, he had excellent intentions, but he was way over his head, and the strain was too much for him. Apple saw that a european "MacWorld Expo" had just self destructed and realized how bad this would appear. So Apple took over the show, hired people to do all the tasks the one guy had tried to do by himself. They promoted it like crazy and even arranged for buses of people to attend from countries all over europe. The show was a success and was never repeated. I saw the guy who started it all sitting in a booth during the show. I recognized his name tag and sat down and talked with him and got his story. I don't remember his name but who ever he is, he had guts to even attempt to do what he did. He did a very good job of getting the thing off the ground. Well, I totally agree, actually. Word processors are strictly that, but document processors have a bit more features in them. In defense of your argument, I know several folks who are very happy with just BBEDIT or Edit II. But document processors, as Word Perfect claims to be, has a lot of graphic and media tools. My argument is that Word Perfect is a very lame document processor and its bells and whistles are marginal. My feelings are that FullWrite Professional is very friendly to use, powerful, and has a friendly interface. When I first entered the Mac World, FullWrite was the only processor that I used which I felt comfortable with, and one that I didn't need a manual to use. It was and still is very intuitive. > And you still have a simple engine with lots of useless exterior. Maybe > with the PowerPC platform we will finally see a move toward a simple core > for a program and optional add-on parts to extend the functionality in > exactly the way you want. Well, supposedly, MacWrite Pro has attempted this. You just add modules and you increase the functionality of the document processor. I think a core program, that is very basic, and one that you add modules to would be marvelous. In some ways, BBEDIT does this with its extensions. MacWrite Pro really let me down with their efforts. I agree with more of your arguments than not. My feeling is that WordPerfect gives the Checker Taxi air conditioning using an ice equipped temperature exchanger rather than freon, and eight track stereo mechanisms with current audio cassette adapters, and it all looks good how it does it. However, the motor is a four cylinder trying to pump up all this stuff. It is a dated product with a pretty interface/s. I honestly feel that WordPerfect fails as a document processor. --Larry ------------------------------ End of Info-Mac Digest ******************************
